| The purpose of our
initial meeting will be to get acquainted and to determine if
there is a need for orthodontic treatment. Please plan to spend
50 to 60 minutes with us for a thorough examination, which includes
a panorex x-ray, digital photographs and discussion of orthodontic
concerns. Treatment recommendations as well as the estimated time
to complete treatment goals and the approximate investment will
be determine at this time. |
| To make it easier
for you, before placing your fixed appliances, we may have to
make space between your teeth to allow the bands to go into place.
Small springs or plastic modules
are two types of spacers we use. Then slowly, over a few days
they gently move certain teeth slightly apart to allow us to accurately
place bands on your next appointment.
This causes temporary soreness but that goes
away in a few days.
What are orthodontic study records?
Diagnostic records are made to document the patient's
orthodontic problem and to help determine the best course of treatment.
As orthodontic treatment will create many changes, these records
are also helpful in determining progress of treatment. Complete
diagnostic records typically include a dental examination, plaster
study models of teeth, photos of the patients face and teeth,
a panoramic or other x-rays of all the teeth, a facial profile
x-ray, and other appropriate x-rays as needed. This information
is used to plan the best course of treatment, help explain the
problem and propose treatment to the patient and/or parents. From
the necessary records, a custom treatment plan is created for
each patient. Custom-made appliances, or braces, are prescribed
and designed by the orthodontist according to the problem being
treated. They may be removable or fixed (cemented and/or bonded
to the teeth). They may be made of metal, ceramic or plastic.

| Dr. Busciglio and
his staff will familiarize you with the appropriate new brace
materials. You'll discover that braces have come a long way since
the first "railroad track" model. New designs include
mini-braces, clear braces and even "invisible" braces.
Custom made appliances or braces are prescribed
and designed by the orthodontist according to the problem being
treated. They may be removable or fixed (cemented and/or bonded
to the teeth). They may be made of metal or ceramic. By placing
a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction,
braces can slowly move teeth through their supporting bone to
a new desirable position. |
Once your teeth are aligned, Dr. Busciglio
uses special instruments to remove your braces. Afterwards, Dr.
Busciglio prescribes an appliance called a retainer.
The retainer holds your teeth in their newly aligned position.
To maintain your new smile, follow your instructions on how often
and how long to wear your retainer. This final treatment stage
is the finishing touches and will help you ensure a lifetime of
beautiful smiles. |
